Qualifications
- Most employers require a bachelor's degree in business management, information technology or a related discipline. Although certification is not required, employment opportunities may increase for those who obtain the Project Management Professional (PMP) certification from the Project Management Institute. Several years of information technology management experience is also required for this occupation.
Analysis
- To understand business requirements, these professional analyze the needs of the organization and its employees. This includes developing the project process as it relates to the needs of the organization and avoiding interruption of business functions, working with executives to create a plan of execution and suggesting an implementation process that meets the required completion time frame and within budget.The planning process involves forming a team of experts required for effective completion of the project. He/She has to state the purpose of the project and assign specific roles to all the team members. He/She will also have to ascertain the time for completion of the project and likewise allot duties, such that the project is completed within the stipulated deadline.
Documentation
- After analysis, the implementation project manager provides documentation and reports on projected costs involved, employees and equipment needed and the time schedule for the implementation process. This involves contacting equipment suppliers and vendors, estimating costs internally and externally of equipment and resources needed, and initiating hiring or reporting the need for outsourced services, as well as creating time lines for each phase of the implementation through completion. These projections are estimated within budget guidelines and presented to top executives for approval. With the approval from top executives, the project is started.
Deployment
An
implementation project manager directs all activities for the
deployment of the project. This includes translating the business
requirements to the deployment personnel, overseeing and motivating
staff, ensuring timely delivery of equipment and supplies needed and
documenting the process. This may also involve identifying potential
problems and presenting desirable solutions to ensure timely and
cost-effective delivery. When the project is completed, the
implementation project manager may be involved in training internal
employees regarding use of the new systems, products or
services.
